Negation (Verneinung)

To make a sentence negative in German, you use one of two words: kein or nicht. The choice is very clear.

1. Using kein (not a / not any / no)

Use kein to negate nouns with an indefinite article (ein, eine) and nouns with no article (like "money," "water," or "people").

Think of kein as "not ein" or "not any."

It must be declined just like the indefinite article ein-.

Examples: * Negating "ein/eine": * Das ist ein Hund. -> Das ist kein Hund. (That is not a dog.) * Ich habe eine Katze. -> Ich habe keine Katze. (I have not a cat / no cat.)

  • Negating No Article (Mass Nouns):

    • Ich habe Geld. -> Ich habe kein Geld. (I have no money.)
    • Er trinkt Bier. -> Er trinkt kein Bier. (He drinks no beer.)

  • Negating No Article (Plurals):

    • Das sind Äpfel. -> Das sind keine Äpfel. (Those are no apples.)
    • Sie hat Kinder. -> Sie hat keine Kinder. (She has no children.)

2. Using nicht (not)

Use nicht to negate everything else. This includes: * Verbs * Adjectives * Adverbs * Proper Nouns (Names, Places) * Nouns with a definite article (der, die, das) * Nouns with a possessive pronoun (mein, dein)

Where to Place nicht

The position of nicht depends on what you are negating. It generally comes right before the word or phrase it is negsating.

1. Negating Adjectives / Adverbs: (Goes before them) * Das Auto ist nicht schnell. (The car is not fast.) * Er fährt nicht gern. (He doesn't like to drive.)

2. Negating Nouns with Definite Articles / Possessives: (Goes before them) * Das ist nicht der richtige Weg. (That is not the right way.) * Das ist nicht mein Auto. (That is not my car.)

3. Negating the Entire Verb/Action: (Goes to the end of the clause) This is the most common use. nicht goes as far to the end as possible, but before any second verb parts (like infinitives or participles).

  • Ich schlafe nicht. (I am not sleeping.)

  • Ich gehe heute nicht ins Kino. (I am not going to the cinema today.)

  • With Verb Bracket:

    • Ich kann heute nicht kommen. (I cannot come today.)
    • Ich habe das Buch nicht gelesen. (I have not read the book.)
